The trekking package, starting from US$2,451 per person, our 8-day Lemosho package, is designed for adventurers of all skill levels. Here is everything you need to know about tackling this incredible route with us.
Why Choose the Lemosho Route?
Starting on the remote western side of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route offers a true wilderness experience. It is an unspoilt, remote, and beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. Unlike the Marangu Route, which can feel crowded, Lemosho is quieter and incredibly scenic.
A unique feature of this route is that an armed ranger accompanies groups through the forest section around the Lemosho glades. Because it spans 8 days, it offers an excellent acclimatization profile, significantly increasing your chances of successfully reaching the summit.
Lemosho Route 8 Days: Itinerary Overview
Our 8-day itinerary is designed to give your body time to adjust to the altitude. Here is a brief overview of what to expect:
- Day 1: Arrival. Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to the Springlands Hotel in Moshi for an overnight bed and breakfast.
- Day 2: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa. Drive to the gate, complete entry formalities, and begin hiking through an undisturbed rainforest to your first camp.
- Day 3: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp. Continue out of the rainforest into a savannah of tall grasses and heather. You will catch your first glimpse of Kibo across the plateau.
- Day 4: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp (via Moir Hut). A gentle walk across the moorland for acclimatization, with incredible views of the Shira Cathedral.
- Day 5: Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp. Climb to the 300 ft tall Lava Tower, then descend to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is vital for acclimatization.
- Day 6: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp. Begin by climbing the non-technical but steep Barranco Wall. From the top, cross hills and valleys to Karanga Camp.
- Day 7: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp. Hike to Barafu Camp, your base for the summit. Rest and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the challenging day ahead.
- Day 8: Summit Day! Begin your push to the summit around midnight. Reach Stella Point for sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Descend to Mweka Camp.
- Day 9: Mweka Camp to Moshi. Continue the descent to Mweka Gate, collect your summit certificates, and return to Moshi for a well-earned rest.
- Day 10: Departure. Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your onward flight, taking home memories of an extraordinary adventure.
How Difficult is the Lemosho Route?
Lemosho is a non-technical trek, it is physically demanding. The main challenges are altitude sickness and fatigue. The “climb high, sleep low” profile of this route helps mitigate altitude issues, but you still need a good level of fitness. Our expert guides are trained in mountain safety and rescue techniques to ensure your journey is as safe as possible.
