Discover the open landscapes of Mikumi National Park
Mikumi National Park sits on the southern circuit, along the route connecting Dar es Salaam with the country’s interior. Tanzania National Parks describes it as easy to reach from Dar es Salaam, with the highway passing through the park and the Mkata floodplain opening out between the hills.
The plain is wide, dotted with acacia, and backed by the Uluguru and Vidunda ranges. TANAPA calls this floodplain the part of the park where game drives are straightforward, because the tracks run through open country and animals are often close to the road. In the dry season the grass thins and wildlife gathers at the river, the hippo pools, and the other waterholes.
Wildlife in Mikumi National Park
TANAPA’s prospectus and brochure name elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard on the Mkata plain, along with zebra, giraffe, eland, hippo, and crocodile. Wild dogs and cheetahs are on the same plains list. Sable antelope, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, and greater kudu are named in the woodland around the plain, where they are harder to find. The brochure also talks about a strong birdlife, from ground hornbills and rollers to bateleur eagles over the grass.
The variety of habitats makes Mikumi appealing to visitors interested in more than the larger mammals. From open grassland to surrounding woodland, the park offers different settings in which to observe Tanzania’s wildlife.
Mikumi shares the country with Nyerere National Park, the former Selous. The brochure says elephants, buffalo, wild dogs, and zebras move between the north of Nyerere and Mikumi.
Safari activities in Mikumi National Park
TANAPA lists game drives, night game drives, and guided walks. Game drives are the main way to explore the park’s open landscapes and look for wildlife across the Mkata floodplain and surrounding areas.
Night game drives offer a different perspective, allowing visitors to experience the park after daylight hours. Guided walks provide another way to explore the natural environment, subject to the park’s regulations and arrangements.
Those are the park’s activities. Africa Paradise Adventures does not publish a Mikumi departure on its safari pages.
